Applique Embroidery Designs

The Guide to Applique Embroidery Designs - Eagle Digitizing

Applique machine embroidery designs are fun and look great! Now, if you're not quite sure what an applique machine embroidery design is, let Eagle Digitizing Company tell you:

What are the benefits of sewn appliqué designs?

Appliqué designs are quite popular as they allow the embroiderer a lot of customization in a given project, allowing them to personally choose the fabric type & pattern. This is a bonus because in my own experience younger kids love decals because of the unique feel of different fabric types.

On the digital side, creating decals is a great way to reduce the number of stitches in your designs and still produce beautiful visuals. Instead of a simple piece of fabric, use a decal technique in place of a large padding area. This means less uptime on your machine without sacrificing design looks!

Techniques on how to stitch appliqué designs

This tutorial will teach you the techniques of how and when to place and cut the material you want in your decal pattern:

Step 1. Start sewing the design as usual. Always stop the machine after the machine sews the outline/marked stitches.

Step 2. Place material on outline stitches. Make sure the square is big enough to completely cover the pins. As an option, you can use a lightweight spray adhesive to secure the material, or use a variety of stabilizers specifically designed for decal placement.

Note that some decal designs may come with SVG files that can be used on various cutters to automatically pre-cut decal shapes. This makes fabric placement quick, easy and perfect!

Step 3. Start the computer. Adhesive stitching will now be sewn on top of the appliqué, securing it to the garment. You can see how the design will look when the stitching is complete in the image below.

Step 4. The next step is to fully cut the adhesive pins. We recommend applique scissors. Applique scissors prevent you from accidentally cutting through clothing...our personal favorite is the 6" double-edged curve.

Step 5. After you have finished cutting the design, start the machine. The design will continue to be sewn and you are done with the appliqué portion of the design.

Hope this helps you better understand appliqué embroiderydesigns and how to sew them.
